Sono indecisa se commentare sul dente (cariato) di John Lennon battuto all'asta per 22mila euro o sulla donna che ha cercato di avvelenare il marito con una bella spremuta alla ... benzina. Con quello che costa!

Shoes matter

If you get married and they only throw rice and confetti at you... you are lucky.
In England, during the Tudors' reign (when else?), they would throw shoes, old shoes, but always shoes. Rice and grains in general were meant to symbolize fertility and wealth, while it's debatable what shoes stood for. Mr. Panati in his Extraordinary Origins of Everyday Things suggests that shoes were a phallic symbol since ancient times and they had the same meaning as rice throwing. I am not totally sure about it since I learned it was Freud who tied them to sex, and particularly to female reproductive organs (shoes are hollow...).
The groom could also hit the bride with a shoe, to show his superiority and to mean she had become his ownership. Needless to say, this is now completely out of time: nowadays men just fall under female high heels&stilettos!

Total Eclipse of the Heart vs Eclissi del Cuore

Non sono contro le cover o le traduzioni di canzoni in altre lingue. Ci sono cose di buona qualita' anche in questo campo di "recupero".

Eppure sono agghiacciata per la versione di Total Eclipse of the Heart che RTL sta presentando in questi giorni come Novita', Eclissi del Cuore cantata da L'Aura e Nek.
Fedelta' alla traccia musicale e al testo, d'accordo, ma in italiano non ha senso. E poi... insomma, una canzone che ha quasi 30 anni di storia alle spalle. Andiamoci piano.
Gia' quando Nek canta "Tornerai non sai" per rendere "turn around bright eyes" a me vengono i brividi e non di piacere.
E allora lancio un appello: non trasmettetela come se fosse una gran bella novita'. Mi si ghiaccia il sangue nelle vene.

Torta Sake

A grande richiesta .... ecco la mia torta simil-sacher. E gia', perche' la vera Sacher nessuno la puo' fare, essendo la ricetta super segreta, custodita gelosamente nella pasticceria dell'Hotel Sacher a Vienna.
La mia Torta Sake non e' niente male, le mancano 5cm in altezza per raggiungere le giuste vette ma e' molto buona, morbida, non eccessivamente dolce e soprattutto va consumata rapidamente. Come dice giustamente A, qual e' il segreto di una torta che dura un mese e mezzo come, per l'appunto, la Sacher?

I am sure I am not the only one to feel this question dancing in her head: how do they decide where to hold the - say - G20 summit or similar high-level meetings?
I understand they need to find a place with high security levels, excellent accommodations and facilities to meet the standards of those leaders. So I am sure that Cannes is a good choice, they are already quite used to meeting the standards of starlets&stars, they can't be impressed by the whims and tantrums of politicians and world leaders.... But do they really need to be pampered? Cannes? Have them come to Beijing: beautiful city, high security level, they have good hotels. But let's them breathe the same polluted air I breathe (together with 20million people) just for a couple of days. Have them go to Liguria, instead of Cannes or Sardinia: now the weather is good. So that they can see what happened because of bad weather just a week ago. But maybe Italy isn't that safe these days.

Piccole manie del vivere quotidiano

Ognuno ha le sue manie. Io ne ho parecchie, una di queste riguarda le ... trilogie ed oltre.
Nell'adorare la lettura, privilegio i libri seriali ed eccomi quindi fan di Harry Potter; lettrice indefessa di Dorothy Dunnett e le sue confuse serie storiche; ammiratrice di Philip Pullman e della sua teoria sulla "polvere"; attualmente alle prese con una trilogia best-seller in Francia, di certa Katherine Pancol - sempre grata a chi mi suggerisce una trilogia o serie che non ho ancora letto.
Che cosa si nasconde dietro a queste piccole manie? Sicuramente c'e' una spiegazione che va al di la' della semplice facciata, tanto piu' che come per i film anche nei libri e' difficile che un autore riesca sempre a mantenere adeguato il "livello" (di scrittura, di credibilita', di scorrevolezza, di tensione...). In questo caso, e' forse il desiderio di allungare, prolungare, rimandare la fine. O anche l'impagabile senso dell'attesa quando aspetto l'uscita del prossimo volume.
